I move the amended motion:

That the Senate:

(a) notes that:

(i) the costs of political unrest fall disproportionately on the rights and wellbeing of women, and

(ii) the Support Association for the Women of Afghanistan (SAWA)-Australia was established in 2004, and that SAWA-Australia (South Australia) was set up in 2010 as its first state branch;

"The Australian Greens welcome the outcome of the Sri Lankan election, which has seen former president Mahinda Rajapaksa fail to return to power as the country's prime minister," Senator Scott Ludlam said today.

"I hope that this signals a new chapter for this nation which has been plagued by horrific civil war, war crimes and crimes against humanity, forced disappearances and ongoing human rights abuses that are currently under investigation by the United Nations.

Commenting on a newly released report by the International Truth & Justice Project (ITJP), Still Unfinished War: Sri Lanka’s Survivors of Torture and Sexual Violence 2009-2015 which details more than 40 torture sites in Sri Lanka while naming over 60 rapists and torturers, Greens Senator Lee Rhiannon said:

The Greens have urged Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop to join with her counterparts in the United States and the EU in calling on Israeli authorities to not proceed with the wholesale demolition of the Palestinian village of Kirbet Susiya in the southern West Bank.

"The proposed destruction of this village is unjustifiable. It has sparked international attention and outrage, and it is time the Australian Government broke its silence," Greens foreign affairs spokesperson Senator Scott Ludlam said.

A year ago today, the world was shocked when a passenger plane was shot out of the sky over eastern Ukraine.

The MH17 tragedy cost the lives of 283 passengers and 15 crew. 38 Australians were amongst those who lost their lives.

Our thoughts today are with the families in Australia and around the world whose lives were so terribly impacted by this event, and whose grief must be all too fresh.

The Greens continue to urge and hope for a peaceful resolution to the conflict, so that other families may be spared the pain and loss caused by this senseless act.

Greens Leader Christine Milne says Nepal is still in crisis, almost a week after the earthquake hit, and Australia must do more to help.

"There's a huge amount of concern around our country right now. People are worried, they want to help. We all want to see more stories of survival," said Senator Milne.

"Australia can send more money, and I'm pleased the Foreign Minister has announced a further $5 million in aid funding . We should also send more military personnel and search and rescue capacity, as this is a role which the ADF is well equipped and experienced in.

Greens Leader Christine Milne has proposed further actions in response to the Bali Nine executions and says the Australian Parliament must demonstrate its cross-party opposition to the death penalty with better safeguards to protect Australian citizens from state-sanctioned execution overseas.

"What happened to Myuran Sukumaran, Andrew Chan and other Australians before them must not happen again. We have a responsibility to do all we can to oppose the death penalty and protect people from it, wherever it exists," said Senator Milne.

On behalf of the Australian Greens I express my deepest sympathies to the families and friends of Andrew Chan, Myuran Sukumaran, and the six other people who have been executed in Indonesia overnight.

Myuran and Andrew will be remembered for overcoming their past to live meaningful lives, even from prison, not just for the way they died.

Their actions over the past ten years were testament to their remorse, and have given many of their fellow prisoners an opportunity to live better lives.

It is a tragedy Andrew and Myuran were denied their own second chance.

Greens Leader Christine Milne says mission creep in Iraq has accelerated and Prime Minister Tony Abbott has committed troops to an unwinnable war.

"Tony Abbott continues to blindly follow the US further and further into the Iraq quagmire. He has absolutely zero idea of what success would look like," Senator Milne said.

"The Prime Minister says he will review the deployment after 12 months but against what criteria? What will constitute success or failure, what will determine whether we stay or come home?
