Dastyari, Turnbull donations: another example of how business figures gain influence?

Greens democracy spokesperson Senator Lee Rhiannon has called for far reaching electoral funding reform in the wake of both Senator Sam Dastyari and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull links with questionable political donations.

"Political donations are having a corrupting influence on Australian political life, and they certainly add to the public's cynicism about what influences government decisions," Senator Rhiannon said.

Call for Turnbull, Shorten to back retired judges’ anti-corruption plan

Greens democracy spokesperson Senator Lee Rhiannon has called on Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Opposition Leader Bill Shorten to give their full and immediate backing to the plan for a federal corruption watchdog drawn up by a significant number of respected corruption fighters, retired judges and legal people.

“It would be political suicide if Malcolm Turnbull and Bill Shorten fail to back a national anti-corruption body,” Senator Rhiannon said.

$500,000 gun lobby donations puts public safety at risk

The Greens have renewed their call to ban political donations from the gun lobby following the release of data that shows firearm interest groups have donated close to $500,000 to political parties.

"Community safety is at risk if the gun lobby is free to hand over money to political parties and then lobby those same parties to weaken gun control measures," Greens gun control spokesperson Senator Lee Rhiannon said.

Billson snubs parliamentary rules and collects extra $75,000

Bruce Billson's apology for his flagrant breach of parliamentary rules is not good enough and he should donate to charity the money he received from a top lobby group while still a member of parliament, Greens democracy spokesperson Senator Lee Rhiannon said.

"What is the point of having rules for MPs and ministers if they can be breached with no consequences," Senator Rhiannon said.

"The Prime Minister's weak leadership is again on display with a third former Coalition government minister blatantly flouting parliamentary rules.
