Labor still putting politics ahead of political donation reform

Lee Rhiannon 5 Sep 2016

It is time Labor showed some backbone on political donation reform, dropped their deceptive attacks on the Greens on the issue and worked collaboratively for far reaching reforms, Greens democracy spokesperson Senator Lee Rhiannon said.

“Labor’s attacks on the Greens are a smoke screen to manage the fallout from their own donation scandals,” Senator Rhiannon said.

“Talk of political donation reform should not be used as a tactic to deflect the latest scandal. Reforms require action and need to go much further than a ban on overseas donations.

Remember the night of the Senate sleepover: Labor heavyweights told us that the Senate would be purged, that the poor would suffer, that democracy would be trashed and that crossbenchers would become a threatened species in this chamber. And the cruelty of it all would not stop with the make-up of the Senate. Labor senators told us that voters themselves would suffer.

Greens challenge Labor – why stop at overseas political donations

Lee Rhiannon 23 Aug 2016

Greens democracy spokesperson Senator Lee Rhiannon has said that Labor’s concern about the potential for overseas political donors to use their money to buy influence should equally apply to wealthy Australian companies that bankroll parties.

“While the former Treasurer Wayne Swan’s call for a debate on overseas political donations is a start this approach does expose Labor’s failure to end the corrupting influence of political donations whatever the source,” Senator Rhiannon said.
