Prime Minister Abbott should immediately stop the clock on negotiations over the secret text of the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP), which threatens to further extend the power of foreign multinational companies.

In the event that Parliament ever resumes, the Australian Greens will move for the Joint Standing Treaties Committee to urgently review what the Abbott Government is proposing to sign us up to.

I rise to speak on the Privacy Amendment (Enhancing Privacy Protection) Bill 2012. The Australian Greens support the aims and objectives of this bill, in particular the unification of the National Privacy Principles and the Information Privacy Principles into the new Australian Privacy Principles that apply to both Commonwealth agencies and private sector organisations.

Greens back pay day loan bill, urge greater consumer protection

 

The Australian Greens have today welcomed the introduction of the government's Consumer Credit And Corporations Legislation Amendment (Enhancements) Bill 2011 and urged the government to stand firm against complaints from the loans industry.

 

"The bill today is a positive step toward tackling what's becoming an increasing problem among Australian households, particularly women on low-incomes," Greens' consumer affairs spokesperson, Sen. Sarah Hanson-Young, said today.

Senator LUDLAM- In evidence that the department submitted to the select committee, you referenced a group called the Australian Communications Consumer Action Network, but there was not a great deal of detail as to what that network is, the make-up of the group, its activities and so on. I want to bring us around, I suppose, to a consumer focus or a user focus. Can you just fill us in on what that group is and what it will be doing?
