Speech: Floods are the reality of climate change

I rise to make a contribution to the debate on the Treasury Laws Amendment (Cyclone and Flood Damage Reinsurance Pool) Bill 2022 and I want to associate myself with the comments made by my colleague Senator McKim. As I speak, communities in many parts of Lismore in New South Wales have been ordered to evacuate again as heavy rains continue to batter the North Coast in my home state. Bandt will call for a flood levy on coal and gas corporations to foot the bill for the mess they have made.

The government’s failure to index the payment means it has been cut in real terms by about 30%.

Despite this build up of announced coal closures before 2030, the government’s own projections that they took to Glasgow show another one to two further coal plants closing in the next eight years, which the government won’t tell us - or coal communities - about.
