Labor’s Reef policy fails on coral bleaching, just as the Coalition’s does

Labor's Great Barrier Reef water quality policy announced today fails to deal with the real cause of coral bleaching - the mining and burning of coal - does not provide enough funding, and dodges the tough issues like a cap on water pollution.

Scientists have today reported that coral bleaching has killed more than one third of coral reefs in the central and northern regions of the Great Barrier Reef.

Budget fails the Great Barrier Reef and clean energy, while further propping up fossil fuels

The Liberals' budget fails the environment and the Great Barrier Reef, cuts billions from clean energy and tops up the billions in hand outs to the fossil fuel industry with another $100 million.

Qld Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens climate change and environment spokesperson, said:

"Our Reef is suffering record coral bleaching driven by global warming but the Liberals are ripping out a billion dollars from clean energy, and funding for work on Reef water quality comes from cutting Landcare.

Budget missed opportunity for public transport and clean energy in Queensland

The Liberal Government's budget fails to provide public transport or clean energy jobs in Queensland and instead focuses on military spending in other states.

"This budget is a let-down, especially for Queensland," Qld Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens Deputy Leader, said.

"While Sydney and Melbourne get billions for infrastructure, the Turnbull Government is denying Brisbane funding for the much-needed Cross River Rail because Queenslanders have voted against asset sales.
