The Australian Greens have labelled a report into the future of the National Broadband Network, which found Australia’s internet needs over the decade would conveniently peak below the 50mb/s threshold NBN co are claiming to provide, as sloppy, unfounded and deliberately  vague.

NBN spokesperson Senator Jordon Steele-John said the speeds noted in the report were already below international standards, and would cement Australia’s position as a second-rate digital player globally.

Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton has flagged introducing legislation obligating Australian companies to assist government agencies with decryption, but his department has failed to clarify today in estimates when they plan to do so.

Australian Greens Digital Rights spokesperson Senator Jordon Steele-John said the lack of understanding demonstrated in estimates about the implications of such legislation was frightening, given there was an acknowledgement it was in draft stages.

The Senate has supported a motion noting the absence of any government response to the unanimous findings of the senate inquiry into the Future of Australia’s video game development industry, and ordered a copy of the response be tabled by 3pm tomorrow.

The Australian Greens have today launched an inquiry into the Economic and Cultural Value of Australian Content on Broadcast, Radio and Streaming Services to shine a light the contribution Australian-made television, film and music makes to our social and cultural fabric.

The ideological attacks on the ABC that the One Nation political party secured from the Liberal Government are well on their way to being enacted with legislation being introduced into the Senate today.

“Australians love and trust the ABC and are sick of seeing the public broadcaster used as political punching bag,” Greens communications spokesperson Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.

“The Greens will fight to protect the ABC from this blatant ideological attack and will do everything we can to save our public broadcaster from the Government and One Nation’s axe.

The Australian Greens welcome the CBS acquisition of Network 10 and are warning the Government against blocking the purchase.

“CBS buying Network 10 is promising news for the future of journalism and quality programming in Australia. CBS has bucked the trend by investing in journalism, streaming services and quality programming in the US, and it would be refreshing to see that unfold here when the status quo is to slash jobs and cheap out on content.

The Australian Greens welcome the Federal Government reviewing local content requirements for children’s television on traditional commercial broadcasters and new streaming services.

“This review must provide practical measures to strengthen Australian children television content for broadcasters and streaming services,” Greens arts and youth spokesperson Senator Hanson-Young said.

“If the big commercial broadcasters have their way, local content quotas would be no more and our children would go without. This simply can’t be allowed to happen.

The Australian Greens are proud to stand with children’s television producers from around the country in fighting to maintain, and strengthen, local content laws.

“Australian children’s television is under attack by big commercial broadcasters who want to cheap out on local content, and the flow-on effects would be irreversibly devastating for our broader community. Proposed changes to copyright laws in Australia do nothing to protect artists and devalue their contribution to our society, The Australian Greens say.

"The Productivity Commission's report is more about a establishing a protection racket for the big multi-national corporations like Google, than a genuine response to audience needs or investing in Australian jobs or industry," Greens Arts spokesperson Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.
