Urgent need for patrol vessel: Brown

Media Release
Bob Brown 18 Jan 2012

Today brings further evidence of the need for Australia to send a patrol boat to the Southern Ocean to monitor Japanese whalers, Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown said.

"News of the assault on Sea Shepherd crew members again points to the urgent need for an Australian patrol vessel to be on site," Senator Brown said in Hobart.

Three crew members from the Steve Irwin have been injured after a Japanese harpoon vessel threw iron grappling hooks at them, about 300 nautical miles north of the Mawson Peninsula in Antarctica, as the Japanese whalers prepare to engage in slaughter in their self-assigned "hunting area", media reports showed.
