Urgent action needed on rental affordability

Media Release
Lee Rhiannon 17 May 2017
The Rental Affordability Index for December 2016 released today shows urgent action needs to be taken by the Turnbull government, Greens housing spokesperson Senator Lee Rhiannon said.
“The deeply shocking statistics about rental affordability keep coming, but we are not seeing any action from the Turnbull government,” Senator Rhiannon said.
“In the recent budget there was no real funding increase for social housing and homelessness services, and no increase in rent assistance for low-income renters.
“The Turnbull government is sitting on its hands while homelessness rises, public housing stock is depleted and the squeeze on rental affordability gets tighter.
“105,000 people have no home at all, and yet the Turnbull government is subsidising investors to buy their fifth or sixth property.
“These figures will continue to get worse until we dramatically increase the supply of social housing and affordable rental housing, and stop rigging the housing system in favour of wealthy investors.”
