Strengthening Our Schools: Supporting our Students and Valuing our Teachers

Education is absolutely crucial for a fair and inclusive society - and a productive economy. Improving our public education system is one of the best investments that we can make as a nation.

We rely on our teachers to do one of the most important jobs in Australia - educating and inspiring the next generation of our children.

That's why we've announced an investment of $1 billion over the next 3 years to support our teachers and students, on top of the extra $2 billion we've promised to get more money to the most disadvantaged schools sooner.

The Australian Greens recognise teachers and school leaders are facing increasing pressures. We want to support teachers by:

  • Increasing teaching staff - we will deliver 2235 more teachers in government schools, at a cost of $162.65 million per year.
  • Providing mentoring and professional development opportunities for teachers worth $20 million per year.

Reducing pressures on teachers helps them do their vital work and fosters supportive school environments, with flow-on benefits for students.

The Greens know that our young people are our future, so we're choosing to invest in students too by:

  • Enhancing the curriculum with extra investments in maths and science, Asian and Indigenous languages, and music, at a cost of $50.6 million a year.
  • Increasing the number of qualified mental health counsellors and social workers in government schools and funding a grants program for student wellbeing initiatives, at a cost of $100 million a year.
