On Thursday November 22nd Senator Peter Whish-Wilson spoke in the Senate on the outcomes of a Senate Inquiry into profiteering in container deposit schemes.  In the lead up to the inquiry Peter went to the Northern Territory and South Australia to tour container deposit recycling facilities, meet people the people who work in them, and learn about how the schemes could be improved.

Peter concluded that it’s not in the interest of the powerful beverage companies to make the schemes more efficient or cost effective; in fact they want to see container deposit schemes scrapped altogether.  There is also evidence that they are profiteering from the existing schemes and passing on these profits as higher costs to customers.
