Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens Deputy Leader and climate change spokesperson, comments on the Newman Government spending $2 million on advertising to try and cover up how damaging its attacks on the Great Barrier Reef were:

"Queenslanders clearly saw through this waste of their own money and it's insulting that the Newman Government tried to fool them.

"It was clear to Queenslanders that Campbell Newman was intent on putting coal above the Reef and they booted him out at the election.

"Queenslanders will feel betrayed that the new Labor Government has continued down the track of dredging to turn the Reef into a shipping super highway for coal exports to cook the planet.

"The Palaszczuk Government is wasting taxpayer money itself by bankrolling the Abbot Point coal port for Adani's mine, with no guarantee we'll get the money back as the mine is unbankable.

"Instead of governments that spend taxpayer money on Reef spin or on bankrolling Reef dredging for mining companies, we need investment in renewable energy with a transition plan for coal workers who are losing their jobs," Senator Waters said.
