Outcome Number: 2 Question No: 48
Topic: National Affordable Housing Agreement
Hansard Page: 28/05/2012 - CA101

Senator Ludlam asked:
How much money have residents saved from sustainability initiatives and energy efficiency within the NAHA build?

Answer:
All proposals for Social Housing Initiative projects were required to meet specified environmental standards to reduce living costs for the tenants that will occupy the social housing. Dwellings built under Stage 2 of the Social Housing Initiative incorporate, where possible, a 6 star National Housing Energy Rating Scheme (NaTHERS) rating which includes energy efficient lighting, solar or heat pump hot water systems, heat retaining ventilation, and water tanks.

The Department does not collect information from Social Housing Initiative tenancies to calculate money saved by residents as a result of sustainability and energy efficiency features in Social Housing Initiative dwellings. The Department cannot compel tenants to attempt to calculate and provide this information as the states and territories are responsible for tenancy management.
