The Australian Greens say communities will lose out now, and in the future, if the Abbott government totally abandons the carbon price and mining tax.
"Tony Abbott will go down in history as the Prime Minister for the big end of town. He's shamelessly making life harder for everyday Australians to boost the profits of the big miners and big polluters," said Greens Leader Christine Milne.
"New modelling shows that families and low-income earners stand to lose thousands of dollars in government payments linked to these policies, but that's just the tip of the rapidly melting iceberg.
"We're losing clean air to breathe, we're losing entire species and habitats. All that we're gaining is more dangerous extreme weather events that threaten our families and friends, but the companies doing it are being completely let off the hook by the Abbott government.
"Already 39 countries and 23 provinces have, or are about to have, emissions trading schemes around the world. Why is Tony Abbott dragging Australia in the opposite direction, and why is the Palmer United Party going along with it, claiming we need to wait for the world to act?
"It's ridiculous to think that largely foreign owned mining companies are raking in billions by selling resources that belong to every Australian, and the Abbott government wants to deny ordinary people a share of the benefits.
"This is a short-sighted and cruel government that will fake a budget emergency to justify brutal cuts, while boosting the profits of foreign miners and big polluters," said Senator Milne.
"Tony Abbott is rushing to secure profits for the big end of town because people are waking up to the fact that if the big polluters and miners don't pay, they will."
