Pokies reform could pass the government by: Greens

Media Release
Richard Di Natale 14 Nov 2011

Greens’ spokesperson for gambling, Senator Richard Di Natale, has welcomed comments from Malcolm Turnbull in support of the Greens’ proposal on pokies reform.

“It’s pleasing to see that Mr Turnbull is appearing to favour the Greens’ $1 bet policy,” said Senator Di Natale.

“Mr Turnbull has joined a growing group in Parliament, including Tony Windsor and Nick Xenophon, who recognise that a $1 bet limit is the most straight forward, cheapest and most effective option for reform.

“Given that $1 bet limits has the backing of the Productivity Commission, psychiatrists, academics and even members of the pokies industry – why can’t the government see the benefits of the policy?

“If Mr Turnbull’s comments are anything to go by, the Opposition could end up supporting $1 bet limits along with the Greens and key independents, and the government could find itself in the minority and on the back foot in the pursuit of pokies reform.

“I implore all sides of politics to recognise the sense in the Greens’ policy and work together to help Australians who are affected by problem gambling.”
