PM Abbott must do more to help bring Greste home

Media Release
Christine Milne 11 Apr 2014

Australian Greens Leader Christine Milne is deeply disappointed that Australian journalist Peter Greste has again been denied bail by an Egyptian court.

"The prosecution failed to provide any evidence to support the charges against Mr Greste and the proceedings were a complete shambles, with footage shown of a totally irrelevant press conference in Kenya," said Senator Milne.

"It's high time that the Australian prime minister condemned the farce going on in Egypt.

"This comes down to defending not only Peter Greste but freedom of the press. In many countries journalists are under huge pressure, in danger of losing their lives or their freedom simply for doing their jobs and sharing the news with the rest of the world.

"Journalistic freedom is central to a democratic society and I call on Tony Abbott to again intervene with the Egyptian president and do everything in his power to secure Mr Greste's full release.

"Peter Greste has been held behind bars on trumped up charges for over 100 days. The charges should be dropped and Mr Greste should be allowed to come home," said Senator Milne.
