Newman says thanks but no thanks to community consultation

Media Release
Larissa Waters 31 Jul 2014

The Newman Government’s 30-year plan, released today, ignores the results of the government’s own public consultation, supposedly used to develop the plan.

“In the consultation, Queenslanders overwhelmingly told the Newman Government not to sell off their assets and to protect the environment,” Australian Greens Senator for Queensland Larissa Waters said.

“When asked what the most important consideration for our economy and landscape should be, the top response was ‘don’t sell off Queensland’s assets’, followed by ‘greater emphasis on sustainable solutions such as solar power’ and ‘protect our wildlife’.

“Yet the Newman Government is pushing ahead with its short-sighted privatisation agenda and is continuing to let the big mining companies destroy our environment, and there are no commitments in today’s plan to change direction.

“The plan is a slap in face to everyone who put their time into providing input to the public consultation.

“Only the Greens can be trusted to stand up against the privatisation of Queensland’s assets and against the destruction of our environment,” Senator Waters said.
