Mardi Gras brutality accusations concerning

Media Release
Sarah Hanson-Young 6 Mar 2013

Allegations of excessive use of force by police officers at this year’s Mardi Gras celebrations are deeply concerning, the Australian Greens say.

“What a shame that such a successful event, which applauds tolerance in the Australian community, now has a cloud cast over it by multiple allegations of police brutality,” the Greens’ LGBTI spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.

“I was at Mardi Gras and I saw people celebrating acceptance and happiness, so it is terrible that this event has now been overshadowed by multiple allegations of excessive use of force by police.

“The footage that has emerged online is disturbing and my thoughts are with the young man involved.

“The NSW Police will be investigating the incident, but I support the calls from NSW Greens MP Cate Faehrmann and Independent MP Alex Greenwich for a wider investigation by an independent body into policing at Mardi Gras.”
