Largest solar power project great news for Australia

Media Release
Christine Milne 31 Jul 2013

The Australian Greens have welcomed news that the largest solar power project in the southern hemisphere will be constructed in rural NSW and will be partly funded by the federal government's Australian Renewable Energy Agency.

"This is not only great news for regional NSW, it is a glimpse of the innovative jobs rich future that comes from a rapid transition to 100% renewable energy. 150 jobs is just the beginning," Australian Greens Leader Senator Christine Milne said.

"Establishing Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) was a Greens win in the negotiations for the Clean Energy Package and this project and jobs are a direct result.

"At last the benefits of putting a price on pollution are being delivered in rural and regional Australia.

"Far from wiping Whyalla off the map, the price on pollution and the complementary measures it supports has delivered the largest solar plant in Australia.

"Labor has been hacking away at ARENA 's funding by in the budget and are cutting it again in Kevin Rudd 's latest ill considered proposal to make it cheaper for polluters to pollute.

"I call on Prime Minister Rudd to now give the industries of the future the green light and not hold them back by ruling out further cuts to ARENA by the razor gang.

"I call on Tony Abbott to not only retain ARENA but commit to its ongoing funding and to the renewable energy target so that rural Australia can continue to benefit from jobs in new renewable energy generating industries."
