Hunt must demand Abbott calls Japanese PM over whale slaughter

Media Release
Peter Whish-Wilson 6 Jan 2014

Senator Peter Whish-Wilson, Greens spokesperson for whaling, said today that in the wake of the horrific images of whales being slaughtered in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary Environment Minister Greg Hunt must demand Tony Abbott calls the Japanese Prime Minister in protest.

"After six years of rhetoric from Greg Hunt calling on the previous government to stop the blood in the water in the Southern Ocean it is time for him to act," said Senator Peter Whish-Wilson.

"Greg Hunt must immediately walk into Tony Abbott's office and get him to call the Prime Minister of Japan and issue a protest on behalf of the Australian people.

"Australia must clearly put on the record with the government of Japan that it is not acceptable for them to kill whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary.

"The Prime Minister and the Environment Minister must decide if they stand on the side of the Australian people or on the side of whale murderers - the standard you walk by is the standard you accept.

"Greg Hunt has already failed his own test to send the ACV Ocean Protector to the Southern Ocean - we will soon see if he passes this one," concluded Senator Whish-Wilson.
