Greens welcome investigation into ABCC "Star Chamber"

The Australian Greens welcome the appointment of Justice Wilcox to investigate the Government's plans to replace the ABCC.

"We remain convinced there is no need for a separate body to oversee the building and construction industry and hope this investigation will confirm our position that the ABCC's powers, including those limiting the right to silence and legal counsel, are unjustified in a modern industrial relations system," said Rachel Siewert.

"The Australian Greens opposed the creation of the ABCC and its coercive powers and will continue to call for its immediate abolition. It is an affront to our democracy. There is simply no justification to treating ordinary workers as if they are master mind criminals."

"Building workers should have the same rights and responsibilities as any other workers under our industrial relations laws. Any criminal behaviour should be dealt with by a criminal justice system."

"We urge Justice Wilcox to seek out and listen to the stories of the ordinary workers who have been caught up in the ABCC and its pernicious processes."

"We urge the Government to not carry over this ideological witch hunt of the former government and regulate the building industry just like any other industry -- in a fair and just manner that balances the needs of productivity and the economy with the health and safety of workers," concluded Senator Siewert.
