Greens welcome decision to drop charges against Australian journalist in Egypt
The Australian Greens today welcomed the decision by Egyptian authorities to drop charges against Australian journalist Austin Mackell.
The Greens communications spokesperson, Senator for Western Scott Ludlam, had followed the case closely from Mr Mackell's arrest on February 11 this year, urging a vigorous diplomatic approach from the start and raising the matter in Parliament. Greens Senator Lee Rhiannon moved a Senate motion of support for Mr Mackell in March.
"The allegations of inciting public unrest against Mr Mackell and his colleagues were unfounded, and part of the military regime's modus operandi of blaming foreigners for local discontent. The Greens commend the efforts of the Australian Government and Australian consular staff in supporting Mr Mackell," said Senator Ludlam.
"We are also relieved that Mr Mackell's colleagues Aliya Alwi and Derek Ludovici have been cleared."
