Greens support for pokies reform is not guaranteed without $1 bet safety net

Media Release
Richard Di Natale 29 Feb 2012

Greens support for the Government’s pokies legislation in its current form is not guaranteed, said Greens’ gambling spokesperson Senator Richard Di Natale, today.

“The Government’s proposed legislation gives nothing more than the veneer of action and could actually put the cause of real reform back for years.

“We will amend the Government’s legislation to ensure that all new machines are fitted with $1 bet technology, not just mandatory pre-commitment. Then if, for whatever reason, mandatory pre-commitment is not fully implemented at the end of the trial, $1 bet limits would be turned on.

“Limiting bets to $1 is not only cheap and effective but the productivity commission has already recommended it, without any need for a trial.

“The Government has said that $1 bet limits are too expensive but their $1.5 billion price tag is based on a lie – so they have no excuse not to back our amendment.

“We need to ensure that meaningful reform is achieved at the end of this process, and the current legislation only guarantees yet another report from the Productivity Commission.”
