The Australian Greens have confirmed they will block any attempt by Tony Abbott's Coalition to change the Racial Discrimination Act to wind back protections against discrimination.
"The Racial Discrimination Act is an extremely important law to protect people against harmful stereotyping and vilification that reinforces systemic racial prejudice and discrimination," says Australian Greens legal affairs spokesperson Senator Penny Wright.
"Who would benefit by changing this law?
"As Senator Milne said at the Press Club yesterday, every Green MP will vote every time for ending discrimination.
"There is an important balance to be struck between the right to freedom of expression and the right to freedom from unfair discrimination but we think that the Act in its current form gets that balance right.
"Tony Abbott has today shown a disregard for human rights protections. In contrast, the Greens will continue to be the leading voice in parliament to create a fairer, more caring society.
"If we are serious about creating a more inclusive Australia we must address discrimination and inequality in our community - and weakening legal protections is not the way to do it."
