Greens to move Senate motion in support of SA renewable energy target

South Australian Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young has said that the release of the preliminary Australian Energy Market Operator report into the SA storms has shown that renewable energy was not to blame for the state-wide blackout and will move a motion, supporting renewable energy in her state, when the Senate next sits.

“This report makes it crystal clear that the storm caused South Australia’s blackout. Anyone saying otherwise is only doing so for cheap political reasons,” Senator Hanson-Young said.

“What we’ve had here is a failure of leadership, from Senator Nick Xenophon and Barnaby Joyce all the way through to the Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

“We need to support the renewable energy industry in South Australia and the thousands of jobs that it will bring to our state.

“This essential industry was unfairly attacked over the last week and we need to see united support for the sector from Canberra.

“I will move a motion in the Parliament, calling on my Senate colleagues to support South Australia’s renewable energy target, helping to restore investor and consumer confidence in the renewable energy industry in our state.

“A strong wind and solar sector in South Australia, coupled with an increase of battery storage in homes and small businesses, will pave the way for this state’s clean, green renewable energy future.

“I call on all of my Senate colleagues, and especially those from South Australia, to support this motion and the South Australian renewable energy industry.”
