Greens move to condemn Geert Wilders

Media Release
Richard Di Natale 19 Sep 2012

Greens spokesperson for multiculturalism, Senator Richard Di Natale, will today give notice of a motion which calls on the Senate to reject the hateful anti-Muslim views of Geert Wilders and his Australian sponsors.

“All members of Parliament should distance themselves from the hateful and corrosive rhetoric of Geert Wilders,” said Senator Di Natale.

“It is particularly important that the Parliament is united on the record in repudiating the views of Mr Wilders because it was not so long ago that Liberal Senator Cory Bernardi met with Mr Wilders and invited him to Australia.”

Senator Di Natale will give notice of the motion this afternoon and it will be voted on tomorrow. The text of the motion is as follows:

Notice of Motion

Geert Wilders

Senator Richard Di Natale

I give notice that on the next day of sitting I shall move: -

That the Senate:

(a)    notes the contribution to Australia's vibrant multicultural society by citizens of all cultures and religions;

(b)   condemns anyone who vilifies any cultural or religious group;

(c)    notes

i)        the application by Dutch politician Geert Wilders to visit Australia to speak against multiculturalism and Muslim immigration;

ii)       with alarm his public statements describing Muslim culture as retarded and barbaric and comparing the Koran to Mein Kampf;

(d)   calls on all members of the Australian Parliament to reject the hateful anti-Muslim views of Wilders and his Australian sponsors.
