Australian Greens health spokesperson, Dr Richard Di Natale, joined Greens communications spokesperson, Senator Scott Ludlam, in Perth today to announce their Kids Ad Package.
“The Greens want to protect our children from being exposed to alcohol advertising,” said Senator Di Natale.
“The Greens have already announced that we would ban the promotion of junk food and gambling during the times when kids are watching television. Today we are announcing that we would apply the same approach to alcohol.
“At the moment, when I sit down with my kids to watch the cricket or the footy, every second ad is for beer, betting odds or KFC. Like most parents, I don’t want a healthy pursuit like sport being used as a vehicle to sell my kids unhealthy or addictive products.
“This isn’t about trying to stop people from having a drink or a punt if they choose to do so but there’s no reason why we need to let our kids be bombarded by those kinds of ads.”
Senator Scott Ludlam said that the Greens’ Kids Ad Package is a consistent and common-sense way to protect our kids from the promotion of adult or unhealthy products.
“As a society, we already accept that it is appropriate to restrict certain types of programming to adult viewing times. That’s why rating requirements for apply to certain timeslots on free-to-air television.
“The promotion of products like alcohol and gambling are already subject to rating-related restrictions but those restrictions are undermined by giant loopholes. For example, sports broadcasts during the day are exempt from the normal rules.
“The Greens’ consistent approach would put an end to the bizarre loopholes. Unlike the old parties, we have the courage to stand up to cashed-up lobby groups and put the interests of your children first.”
