Greens Greet Gun Tax

Media Release
Bob Brown 10 Jun 1998

Greens Senator Bob Brown (Tasmania) has phoned the office of Federal Justice Minister Amanda Vanstone to guarantee support for a massive new guns tax.

Senator Brown said that it is rare for him to offer the Government the extra necessary vote to get a tax measure through the Senate.

"Several states have moved to weaken the 1996 national gun control agreement in various ways. Senator Vanstone's plan to tax guns sold outside that agreement deserves swift implementation - particularly as One Nation, which wants to see the sort of semiautomatics used at Port Arthur back in gunshops, may hold the balance of power in Queensland after Saturday and in the Senate after federal elections".

Senator Brown also backed the proposal by the National Coalition for Gun Control for a referendum to transfer gun control laws from the states to the Commonwealth.
