Greens call for moratorium on Afghan deportations after Federal Court ruling
The Greens are calling for an immediate moratorium on the deportation of Hazaras back to Afghanistan in light of the Federal Court’s ruling today.
“Now that the Federal Court has intervened the government must instantly commit to not sending any Afghan Hazaras back to Kabul,” Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said today.
“There are 120 Hazaras who have been saved by this ruling after the Minister’s unlawful decision to earmark them for deportation.
“It is simply too dangerous to return these people as their safety cannot be guaranteed.
“Canada already has a moratorium in place, because they acknowledge the unacceptable danger, and it is high time the Australian Government did the same.
“Politicians in Afghanistan have written to the Australian Government warning that these people should not be sent back to Afghanistan.
“This government needs to listen to the concerns of the experts, the Afghan MPs and the Greens and halt any deportations immediately.”
