Greens $1 bet policy gaining momentum

Media Release
Richard Di Natale 27 Oct 2011

Support for the Greens’ $1 bet pokies policy is growing and gaining momentum said Greens’ gambling spokesperson, Senator Richard Di Natale.

“I was pleased to hear Andrew Wilkie publicly confirm yesterday that he would support a shift away from mandatory pre-commitment and towards the Greens policy of $1 bet limits.

“He is the most recent of several independent MPs to flag their potential support for the Greens position, which is now clearly growing in momentum and offering a clear pathway for meaningful reform.

“The Greens $1 bet policy must be starting to look extremely attractive to the government right now,” said Senator Di Natale.

“The Opposition Leader has yet again taken on the roll of wrecking ball and now James Packer is weighing into the fight against mandatory pre-commitment.

“The government will have a huge battle on its hands if it pursues mandatory pre-commitment. The Greens’ policy is much harder to attack because it is cheaper, simpler and more effective. It also nullifies industry claims that a pre-commitment card will deter recreational punters.

“If the government was to come on board with the Greens position it would be a game-changer.

“I am optimistic that the government will consider a shift because the Greens policy is the most popular and effective way to deal with problem gambling.”
