Estimates: compensation for nuclear veterans questions

Senate Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Legislation Committee
Department of Veterans' Affairs

20 November, 2013

Senator WRIGHT: I am just interested to know: is the issue of expanding compensation for veterans of the nuclear testing at Maralinga in the 1950s and 1960s under consideration by the Department of Veterans' Affairs?

Mr Lewis: Not that I am aware of.

Mr Harrigan: There are no plans at the moment to revisit the compensation entitlements eligibility for those who were participants in the British nuclear tests.

Senator WRIGHT: No consideration at all has been given to that?

Mr Carmody: Non-liability healthcare treatment is available to everyone who meets the definition of a participant under the Australian Participants in British Nuclear Tests (Treatment) Act 2006, for testing and treatment at least of any cancer. That is already available.
