ESAA divided but Greens call for increase in RET

Media Release
Christine Milne 14 Sep 2012

"As the Climate Change Authority takes submissions on the renewable energy target it's hardly surprising that the vested interests of the old fossil fuel order are doing everything in their power to undermine the renewable energy target." Christine Milne, Leader of the Australian Greens said today

"If Australia is to make the transformation to a clean energy economy we need to move to 100 per cent renewable energy as quickly as possible with the Renewable Energy Target increased to at least 50 per cent by 2030.

"The attacks on the RET now being mounted by Origin Energy TruEnergy, the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Australian Industry Group ought to be dismissed as simply trying to prop up the increasingly shaky business case of the coal fired generators .

"The Energy Supply Association of Australia's members are divided between the green and brown elements, with the dirty elements coming out on top to oppose the RET.

"This is a classic case of the last thrash of the old dinosaurs. Instead of trying to frustrate renewable energy we need to get behind it because renewable energy is driving down the wholesale price of power and ultimately power bills."

Today is the last day for submissions to both the Climate Change Authority on the Renewable Energy Target scheme and the Senate Committee on Electricity Prices.
