Don't be panicked into terror changes: Greens
Australian Greens spokesperson for legal affairs Senator Penny Wright has today warned against being swept up in the Abbott Government's anti-terror fear campaign.
The Australian Greens welcomed the restoration of the Countering Violent Extremism funding, but warned broader elements of the counter-terrorism package would undermine basic human rights.
"Today's re-announcement is a feel-good moment to distract from the more sinister elements of the Abbott Government's fear campaign on terrorism," Senator Wright said
"There has been no change to the Australian terror threat; we should not be panicked into changes that undermine our legal protections.
"Tony Abbott's radical plan could see ordinary Australians presumed guilty for travelling overseas, while others could be detained simply for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
"The Greens are committed to fighting terrorism and protecting our peace and security, but anti-terror laws must always be justified and proportionate.
"It's no wonder many in the Muslim community are feeling targeted and aggrieved by the Abbott Government's approach."
