A desperate government dog-whistles to sell bad housing policy

Media Release

The Australian Greens have slammed the Turnbull government’s latest proposal on housing – pushing migrants out of Sydney.

Greens spokesperson for housing Senator Lee Rhiannon said, “Today the Turnbull government is desperately trying to distract from their own failures on housing policy with some shameless dog whistling.

“They are doubling down on their attacks against migrant communities to build a false narrative about what is driving the housing crisis.

“It is not being fuelled by migrant communities in Sydney, but by decades of bad policy and the Turnbull government’s refusal to use some of the biggest policy levers available to them.

“We do need to see more infrastructure and more jobs in regional and rural areas in NSW.

“But, whether the Turnbull government is telling young people to leave major cities, dog-whistling about migrants driving up house prices or making excuses for relocating nearly 200 staff from Canberra – the ‘forget Sydney, try Tamworth’ approach remains an appallingly lazy and useless one,” Senator Rhiannon said.
