Death of West Papuan leader a 'tragedy' – Brown

Media Release
Bob Brown 3 Oct 2006

Greens Leader Bob Brown today expressed his immense sorrow at the death of a great West Papuan leader, Willem (Wim) Zonggonau.

"I was very sorry to hear of Wim's death. He was a fine and inspiring person," Senator Brown said.

"I can still remember when Australian officials dragged he and Clemens Runawery off the plane on Manus Island in 1969. They were stopped from travelling to the United Nations to tell them about the sham referendum which had denied Papuans their independence.

"If the Papuans' wishes for independence had been heard fairly and openly back then, I have no doubt Wim would have been a great leader, even prime minister of, West Papua."
