The Australian Greens said today the Coalition are showing total disregard for science and environmental protection by scrapping the management plans for our nation's world-leading network of marine protected areas.
"Our marine parks are now basically lines on maps. Nobody should be fooled- this decision guts marine parks," Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens marine spokesperson said today.
"The Government is pretending they are committed to marine parks, but this decision effectively eliminates them. This isn't about marine protection, it is about the Government's mates in fishing and industry.
"Ignoring the science of marine protection means ignoring the communities around the country who rely on fishing and tourism industries.
"Marine protected areas help replenish fish stocks and protect important marine environments, which are under threat from development, pollution and ocean warming.
"The management plans are based on more than 10 years of science and consultation. Science and consultation are two words that mean nothing to this Government.
"The Government know this is an appalling decision and they have purposely avoided Parliamentary scrutiny by getting the Governor-General to re-proclaim the parks.
"This is a bad day for marine protection" Senator Siewert concluded.
