Tony Abbott has abandoned any pretence of caring about global warming.
"Tony Abbott is not fit to serve as Prime Minister because this is the critical decade to address the climate emergency," Greens Leader Senator Christine Milne said.
"By abandoning even the meagre bipartisan 5%-25% target for emissions reduction, he has relegated Australia to global laggard as negotiations are now underway for a 2015 treaty.
"Once a sceptic, always a sceptic is the best way to describe the would-be PM. A man who maintains that global warming is ‘crap'.
"The world is now in a climate emergency with the hottest year on record, with increasing acidification of the seas and more extreme weather events, yet Tony Abbott is still in denial.
"He doesn't care about the costs in dollars or lost lives.
"He has refused to model his Direct Action plan because he knows it is rubbish and is not supported by a single reputable economist or scientist.
"Until now, there has been a contradiction between Abbott's apparent commitment to reducing emissions by 5-25% by 2020, and the limit he has placed on spending under his absurd Direct Action sham.
"By announcing the spending limit is immovable, the Coalition is clearly indicating that any target above 5% is now definitely off the table.
"This would be laughable if it wasn't so serious. In no way, does a 5% target represent an acceptable emission reduction goal for Australia.
"The world's governments have agreed we need to work together to constrain global warming to less than two degrees. It is impossible to mount any argument that a 5% emission reduction is a fair contribution to that international effort.
"The Abbott Government is going to come under serious international pressure, including from the G20, to meet our responsibility.
"It's hardly surprising Abbott wants to abolish the Climate Change Authority and the Climate Commission. If he is to get away with shirking his responsibility he urgently needs to shoot the messengers.
"Voters now know Tony Abbott does not agree that Australia must contribute equally to the global effort to constrain global warming to two degrees.
"This is why you need a strong Greens voice in the Senate to stand up against the excesses of an Abbott government after the 7th September to protect the environment and address global warming."
