Call for AFP investigation - Turnbull must act on Hockey hire car habits

Media Release
Lee Rhiannon 31 May 2016

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has been urged to support an investigation by the Australian Federal Police into reports that former Treasurer Joe Hockey’s Cabcharge account has been misused.

Greens democracy spokesperson Senator Lee Rhiannon said, “Considering how the former Treasurer and his colleagues quickly referred the former speaker Mr Peter Slipper to the AFP the same rules should apply in this latest scandal.

“As this case involves possible fraud there is a clear case for Mr Hockey’s hire car habits to be investigated by the AFP.

“If the Prime Minister does not back an AFP investigation Mr Hockey’s hire car habits will dog Mr Turnbull just as Mrs Bishop’s now infamous helicopter ride undermined Mr Abbott’s authority when he was PM.

“FOI documents reveal that Cabcharge dockets signed on behalf of Mr Hockey are worth at least $10,000. This money was paid to Cabcharge by the Department of Finance.

"When there was a dispute over former Speaker Peter Slipper's use of $900 of his travel allowance the AFP was involved, so surely they should investigate this current incident involving Mr Hockey’s use of a hire car.

“The questionable Hockey hire car arrangements add more weight to the need for reform of how MPs use their allowances.

"The Greens will continue to work for a tighter rules and a stronger disclosure regime for all MP allowances based on regular public release of information.”
