Bring combat troops home from Afghanistan - Brown

Media Release
Bob Brown 8 Jun 2011

Australia should follow the lead of Canada and the Netherlands and bring our combat troops home from Afghanistan, Greens Leader Bob Brown said today.

"Canada's 2,800 combat troops are preparing to go home. The Netherlands have already gone, after the collapse of public support and the Dutch government over whether to extend their mission," Senator Brown said in Hobart.

"A Galaxy poll at the weekend showed most Australians want our troops brought home from Afghanistan and that should be heeded by the Government and Opposition. This level of opposition is higher than during the Vietnam War."

There have been 27 Australian Defence Force personnel killed and 181 ADF members wounded in action in Afghanistan since 2002.
