Responding to news reports that the Japanese fleet had suspended its whale hunt after tireless pressure from the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, Senator Bob Brown warned that vigilance was needed as the fleet now appeared to have stopped running east and was returning west.

The Japanese don't support whaling, the rest of the world doesn't want it, whaling is running at a financial loss and the "scientific" justification is a lie, Senator Brown said.

Senator Brown also urged all parliamentarians to support the Greens bank bill, due to be voted on next week, which would put an end to $2 ATM fees. Australians are spending more than $750 million per year on ATM fees, an Australian Institute report released earlier today shows.
