Barnett’s solar re-think must extend to the big picture

Media Release
Scott Ludlam 12 Aug 2013

The Australian Greens have welcomed the WA Government's more reasoned approach to solar feed-in-tariffs, while warning Mr Barnett must recognise that renewable energy is the way forward for WA.

"Congratulations to the thousands of Western Australians who stood up to Mr Barnett and made him realise that he couldn't break a promise to electricity customers," Greens Senator for WA Scott Ludlam said.

"Now it's time for Mr Barnett to see the bigger picture.

"We have an ageing electricity network in WA that is based on inflexible fossil fuels, of which renewable energy installers intend to be a part.

"The Greens' Energy 2029 report is a costed, technical plan for transforming WA's south-west electricity grid to 100% renewable energy by 2029 - in the process creating between 22,000 and 27,000 new local, skilled jobs.

"I will be sending a copy of Energy 2029 to Mr Barnett today and offering him a briefing.

"The Barnett Government , and the former Labor State Government, have a poor record in how they have treated customers who install renewable energy systems or buy green or smart power.

"Both have regarded these customers as an inconsequential minority years while ignoring a growing desire across Western Australia for renewables, and the global trend towards renewables.

"The public have shown where they stand, the Greens have provided the path forward with Energy 2029 and we now call on the old parties to follow."
