Senator Brown calls for release of hostages

A revolt in West Papua (Irian Jaya) requires maximum diplomatic action by the Howard Government, Greens Senator Bob Brown told the Senate today.

"The 2 million West Papuans are organising a nation-wide voters revolt. None of the 10 parties in the upcoming Indonesians elections has a policy of Independence for West Papua," said Senator Brown.

"However West Papuan leaders are facing arrest for even raising the issue. At least forty-eight are already in prison and face torture.

Senator Brown also used the Senate debate to call on the OPM, the Free West Paua Movement, to release 11 Javanese being held hostage in deplorable conditions, near the Papua-New Guinea border.
