Abbott health policies will cause a world of pain hears Senate Committee

Media Release
Richard Di Natale 8 Oct 2014

Australian Greens health spokesperson and former GP, Dr Richard Di Natale, said today that the Senate Select Committee on Health has heard damning evidence about the impacts of the Abbott Government’s health policies.

“The combination of the Abbott Government’s health policies would be nothing short of disastrous for our health system and the community,” said Senator Di Natale, Deputy Chair of the Committee.

“Cutting funding to health prevention initiatives and introducing a co-payments would put more pressure on hospitals and emergency departments. This would occur in the context of the Abbott Government ripping $50 billion out of the hospital system over the next decade.”

The committee hearing comes on the same day as NSW Health Department documents have revealed that the GP co-payment would force an extra 500,000 presentations to emergency departments each year.

“Make no mistake, we are in for a world of pain. Evidence to the committee from a number of witnesses indicates that beds will close, waiting lists will explode, emergency departments will be clogged up and there will be longer ambulance waiting times.

“The end result is that people will suffer needlessly, some will lose their lives and we will all pay more.”

“Looking after the health of our community should be the top priority for any government. The fact that the Abbott Government has slashed hospital funding instead of cutting handouts to the big end of town shows just how warped its priorities really are.”
