"Just as Gallop Labor made the monumental decision in 2004 to create 29 forest national parks in Western Australia, so the time is ripe for the great forests of Tasmania, Victoria and South East New South Wales to be protected," Senator Brown said.

Thursday 25th February 2010, 12:00am

The blocking of a Senate inquiry into potential toxic leaching from eucalypt plantations into Tasmania's George River by both Labor and Liberal today was an abrogation of responsibility, according to the Greens.

Greens Senators Bob Brown and Christine Milne moved for the inquiry following reports that plantations of Eucalyptus nitens were contaminating water supplies near St. Helens in North East Tasmania, with impacts on human and animal populations.

Eco certification too complicated?

Here's a good post on Treehugger about the need for better regulation of eco-labelling.

The market research group BBMG asked people to determine recognition of 13 of the estimated 400+ green labels already out there. Two thousand adult consumers were polled. Recognition was strongest for government sponsored, single attribute labels and weaker for non-government marks. BBMG conclude that too-numerous labels might confuse consumers.

Carbon Sink Forests/Managed Investment Schemes

Speech | Spokesperson Christine Milne
Thursday 18th June 2009, 12:00am

by leave-I wish to speak for a couple of moments on the Standing Committee on Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport report Implementation, operation and administration of the legislation underpinning carbon sink forests and the government's response to it, and I move:

That the Senate take note of the document.

I have to say that the government's response does not satisfy the concerns that I raised in the dissenting report from the majority report. In view of the collapse of managed investment schemes in recent times, I think the concerns that were put on the table by the Greens when this legislation was being debated are now more relevant than ever. At the time, the majority committee report said:

Greens in vigorous pursuit of forests solution in climate change

Brown responds to loggers' lobby

Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown has put logging of Australia's native forests on the negotiating agenda with Prime Minister Rudd and the Minister for Climate Change Penny Wong.

"I have explained to the Prime Minister, in detail, the latest research from the Australian National University showing the carbon emissions from logging native forests in New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania, could be more than ten times (1000%) above government estimates," Senator Brown said.

"I have also outlined the compound disaster awaiting many rare Australian plant and animal species if both logging and global warming proceed as projected - for example, one third of Australia's bird species may be extinct this century," Senator Brown said.

"Not surprisingly, the native forests destruction industry has come out with its twisted barrel blazing. At recent Senate hearings, the industry was unable to provide any figures on the greenhouse gas emissions from cutting down and burning wild forests. The industry is into studied ignorance.

"The Tasmanian Minister for Forest Destruction, David Llewellyn, has no idea of the emissions from logging the Upper Florentine, Styx and Weld Forests and his claim that it is a ‘carbon-positive' process which increased carbon uptake would fail a primary school test on climate change," Senator Brown said.
