The Greens congratulate the Western Downs Alliance for their legal challenge to ensure the water trigger is enforced against CSG in western Queensland.

"It appears Minister Hunt has ignored the impacts of CSG on water in approving Santos' project to drill 6,100 CSG wells in Queensland," Qld Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens mining spokesperson, said.  

"It has been left to the community to make sure our water trigger is enforced by taking the Minister to court.

Greens candidate for New England Mercurius Goldstein and Senator Rhiannon today launched the ‘Protecting our precious environment' campaign that calls for improved environmental protection for the Pilliga and Leard forests.

Former Greens leader Bob Brown is supporting the campaign.

Mr Goldstein said "We are seeing areas of great environmental significance like our public Pilliga state forest face serious threats from CSG mining.

Greens commit to ground-breaking $2 billion fund to fix Reef water quality

The Greens today announced a plan to protect the Great Barrier Reef, including a $2 billion fund and a legal cap on run-off pollution fix water quality, as well as action on global warming and a stronger role for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.

Greens Deputy Leader Senator Larissa Waters said:

“This is the critical election for the Reef.  Our best scientists are telling us that could lose the Reef within a generation unless we take immediate action on global warming and fixing water quality.

Greens candidate for New England Mercurius Goldstein and Greens NSW Senator Lee Rhiannon have commented on news that Santos is pushing ahead with CSG mining in the Liverpool Plains. 

Greens NSW Senator Lee Rhiannon said “The Greens have stood with farmers on the Liverpool Plains from the beginning and we will continue to support them in their fight against CSG. I have worked with the community as a Greens MP and as a Senator. 

“Last year Santos donated $168,755 to the major parties, including $86000 to the Liberals and Nationals.

Greens put Queensland’s native wildlife on the election agenda on World Environment Day

On World Environment Day today, the Greens launched their $2.1 billion national election policy to protect native wildlife, which would help bring threatened species such as bilbies and koalas back from the brink of extinction in Queensland. 

 

Qld Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens Deputy Leader, said the Greens plan would commit $2 billion over 6 years to re-establish and double funding for the national Biodiversity Fund, which was abolished under Abbott/Turnbull Government after Labor halved its funding while in government.
