Holden must clean up before it clears out

The Australian Greens are calling for a plan to clean up the Holden plant and surrounding areas to be expedited following the 122-hectare Elizabeth site hitting the market today.

“It is absolutely essential that before Holden closes its doors, there is an action plan in place for the clean-up of the site, there aren’t any hazardous health issues for people and the environment isn’t trashed,” Greens Senator for South Australia Sarah Hanson-Young said.

Meat processing industry job losses – govt must help locals find secure work

The Australian Greens extend their condolences to the staff and their families affected by the closure of Manildra Meat Company in Cootamundra. The Greens are calling on state and federal governments to work with the community to find secure jobs for these workers. 

150 permanent staff and 70 casual staff at the company will lose their jobs. Today will be the final day of processing. 

Greens industry spokesperson NSW Senator Lee Rhiannon said, “This is another blow for NSW and the Riverina and our thoughts are with all of these workers and their families.

Australian Greens portfolio reshuffle: Senator Rhiannon picks up Housing, Industry and Gun Control

Portfolio allocations for the Greens parliamentary team was announced today. 

Senator Rhiannon has taken on three new portfolios: Housing, Industry and Gun Control. She will retain her portfolios of Democracy, Local Government and Animal Welfare.

“Australia faces tremendous challenges, with the provision of housing affordability one of the most critical if we are to reduce inequality. I look forward to picking up on the leading work of Senator Scott Ludlam in this area,” said Senator Rhiannon.

Greens push for national takeover of energy market after COAG fails on renewables

Greens energy spokesperson Adam Bandt today said that the Greens will push to give the Commonwealth power for a national takeover of the energy market after the COAG meeting of Energy Ministers failed to deliver a co-operative plan to support renewable energy. Mr Bandt said the Greens will move when Parliament resumes to amend the national electricity laws to make cutting pollution an overriding goal of the energy system.

Greens MP David Shoebridge and Greens Senator Lee Rhiannon are in Wollongong today meeting with Unions and steel workers to talk about plans to secure the future of the steel industry in the Illawarra.

With the final vote on the NSW Steel Protection Bill due next week, cross party support growing for a Federal Steel Protection Bill and local Coalition MP Gareth Ward refusing to even debate steel in the Illawarra, it essential that MPs are in the region to listen to steel workers and other residents.

Labor must put out Frydenberg’s renewables bonfire: Greens

In response to Environment & Energy Minister Josh Frydenberg’s comments that he will proceed with the $1.3 billion cut to ARENA grant funding, Greens Energy spokesperson Adam Bandt MP called on Labor to abandon its support for the Liberals’ funding cuts.

“Labor must drop its election cut to ARENA and put out Josh Frydenberg’s renewable bonfire,” Mr Bandt said.

“The make up of the new Senate means we have an opportunity to protect the $1.3 billion of ARENA funding the Coalition wants to cut, but Labor needs to get on board.”

Greens to invest in Antarctic Science. It's time to remove the world’s blindfold as we face climate change

Greens spokesperson for Antarctica, Senator Peter Whish-Wilson, has today released the most comprehensive Antarctic science funding package ever put forward by a political party.

Senator Whish-Wilson said, “The work of Australia’s Antarctic scientists is pivotal in understand the risk of climate change. Nothing shows this more than the recent discovery that the East Antarctic ice-sheet giant isn’t as stable as we thought and is now starting to collapse. This alone could potentially add several metres to catastrophic sea-level rise.
