Senate calls for Australia to act against organ harvesting

The Senate has passed a motion recognising the human rights challenges of forced organ procurement in parts of the world and inviting the government to tackle the problem of Australians travelling to receive organs from non-consensual donors.

“Organ harvesting is an unthinkable crime against humanity and we must do everything we can to stop it,” said Australian Greens Senator Janet Rice.

Greens Welcome Bishop's Syria Withdrawal Suggestion

The Greens have welcomed the surprise suggestion by Foreign Minister Julie Bishop that the US and Russia consider military withdrawal from the Syrian conflict.

“This is an important recognition that the path to peace in Syria lies through military draw-down rather than persisting with endless escalation,” Greens defence spokesman Senator Ludlam said.

Pretty speeches abroad, human rights violations at home

The Prime Minister's pitch for UN Human Rights Council Membership appears to be operating in a parallel universe, the Australian Greens said today.

"Australia's own record of human rights violations is facing international condemnation like never before, and until the bipartisan race to the bottom ceases, the Government has no hope of making a persuasive case for Membership," Acting Greens leader Senator Scott Ludlam said today.
