Marriage equality: the time has come

Dear friend,

Australia is ready for marriage equality. The community understands that it's an issue of basic fairness. Parliament starts debating our laws to end this discrimination today. It's an issue that's found its time.

But Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott are standing in the way.

We've just launched a new push to see the end of marriage discrimination by the end of the year - you might have seen it on the news last night.

If you agree that it's time Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott stopped delaying the inevitable and got out of the way, watch our new video and share it with your friends and family.

Our pressure and the community campaign for equality have already changed hearts and minds here in Canberra: a House Committee looking into Adam Bandt's Bill has just recognised a groundswell of community support for change. The Senate inquiry will report back on my Bill for equality next Monday. We think the end of marriage discrimination in Australia is inevitable.

But without the support of the Prime Minister - and without Tony Abbott giving Coalition members a conscience vote - marriage equality will not happen in Australia this year.

Thousands have already called on Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott to stop blocking equality - join them here today.

Yours,
Sarah Hanson-Young

P.S. We have lots planned in the coming months to keep the momentum for change growing. Keep in touch with me on my Facebook page for breaking news on the campaign.
