Greens save NBN from automatic privatisation

NBN press conference 22

The Australian Greens are one step closer to ensuring the National Broadband Network remains a public asset and that mistakes made in the privatisation of Telstra are not so easy to repeat.

Amendments to the Telstra Bill secured by the Greens mean that any move to sell the NBN will be subject to parliamentary scrutiny.

This is a significant improvement on the Government's plan, which meant Cabinet could privatise the NBN after 5 years without any debate or scrutiny in Parliament.

The Greens believe the NBN is vital telecommunications infrastructure that should remain in public ownership so as to avoid the situation that we currently find ourselves in with Telstra; where new legislation is required to structurally separate the wholesale network from the retail components in order to build the NBN due to the market failure.
