The Greens have today launched a new video that calls on the public to stand up for the Murray River by sending a video message to federal parliament.
"The time has come to stand united and call on Minister Burke to take charge of the failing reform process to secure a healthy and sustainable river system," said Greens' water and Murray Darling Basin spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young.
"My video calls on the public to stand up for what is important to them - a plan that delivers for our local communities, keeps the Murray Mouth open, reduces salinity levels and preserves and protects our environment and economy.
The Greens' video features Senators Christine Milne and Hanson-Young, along with South Australian community leaders, farmers, environmentalists and community members, who are united in calling for water reforms that will uphold SA's rights to a healthy river.
"I encourage the community - if you have a message for Minister Burke about what the Plan must achieve, now is the time to speak out" said Senator Sarah Hanson-Young.
"Minister Burke, and federal and state parliamentarians, must listen to the public and their determination for a healthy river for future generations."
"On Monday the Authority released amendments to the draft plan that further fail the river and its communities, and fails my home state of South Australia.
"South Australia has been the leader in responsible water usage. South Australians need to see that their federal representatives are defending SA's right to healthy communities and a healthy environment in the long term.
"We need a plan that is geared towards returning at least 4000GL to the environment as the climate dries, reducing all groundwater extraction unless it is justified by comprehensive scientific research, and spending the $9 billion in the best way to get value for money.
"As it stands, the plan will be nothing more than a $9 billion flop and cost Australian taxpayers even more in the courts.
