Australian Greens Leader, Senator Christine Milne, said: "Australia is a vibrant and healthy democracy which upholds peaceful protest, but has no place for violent protest.

"The Greens condemn violence and abhorrent placards inciting violence and believe that violence is no way to convey a message, present religious beliefs or resolve disputes.

"We welcome clear statements from leaders and members of the Islamic community in Australia condemning the violence and noting that this protest is not representative of them."
